Isaiah Hartenstein Signs Three-year Extension With Oklahoma City Thunder Through 2028-29

The Oklahoma City Thunder are set to decline Isaiah Hartenstein’s $28.5 million team option for 2026-27 and agree a fresh three-year, $75 million contract, according to reports. The new deal keeps the 7-footer with Oklahoma City through the 2028-29 season. Combined with the current agreement, Hartenstein’s guaranteed earnings with the franchise rise to $134 million across five years.

Hartenstein originally arrived in Oklahoma City as a free agent in 2024 on a three-year, $87 million contract, which carried that third-year team option now being turned down. The Thunder are instead reshaping the final season into a longer commitment. The move secures continuity at centre for a team that has leaned on Hartenstein’s size and physical presence.

Hartenstein signs three-year Thunder deal

Across the past two regular seasons, Hartenstein has started 99 of 104 games for Oklahoma City and opened 35 of 38 playoff contests. Last season, Hartenstein averaged 9.2 points and 9.4 rebounds while shooting 62.2 percent from the field. The Thunder often paired Hartenstein with 7-1 Chet Holmgren, using a double-big frontcourt to control the glass and protect the rim.

Oklahoma City’s front office also reshaped the roster around this decision. The Thunder agreed trades sending Isaiah Joe to the Detroit Pistons and Aaron Wiggins to the Atlanta Hawks. Those deals did not bring back matching salaries, which helped Oklahoma City create the financial flexibility needed to commit to Hartenstein’s new three-year contract.

The organisation’s confidence in Hartenstein is reflected in regular playing time and postseason use. Hartenstein featured heavily during playoff runs over the last two years and maintained strong efficiency near the basket. His rebounding, screening and interior defence have become central to how Oklahoma City structure line-ups, particularly in bigger formations alongside Holmgren.

The decision to restructure rather than simply exercise the option keeps one of Oklahoma City’s core frontcourt players under contract through 2028-29 on a clearly defined timeline. With salary moved out in the trades involving Joe and Wiggins, the Thunder maintain roster stability while committing long term to Hartenstein’s role in the centre rotation.
