Tiger Woods To Miss The Masters As He Steps Away To Focus On Health
Tiger Woods will not compete at The Masters after confirming a break from golf, following a recent car crash and arrest on suspicion of DUI. The 15-time major winner, aged 50, has entered a not guilty plea and says the decision is linked to health concerns.
Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley has stated that Woods, a five-time Masters champion, will skip all tournament duties next week. The Masters starts on April 9, with Rory McIlroy defending the Green Jacket after last year’s win.

Woods explained the reasons for stepping back in a statement released through social media accounts on Tuesday. The statement stressed personal welfare and long-term recovery, and confirmed a temporary exit from competition. The following quote was issued by Woods and has not been altered in any way for clarity.
"I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in," Woods said in a statement posted to his social media accounts. "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery. I'm committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."
The arrest followed a rollover crash on Friday, after which Woods was detained on suspicion of DUI. Woods did not appear in person when entering a written plea of not guilty through legal representatives on Tuesday. The decision to miss The Masters aligns with that legal process and the health plans outlined in the statement.

Ridley underlined Augusta National’s stance, making clear that the club accepts Woods’ absence from competitive and ceremonial roles. Ridley said: "Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being, Ridley said in a statement. Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta."
Woods did not appear at Augusta in the previous year because of injury, continuing a spell away from outdoor events. The last appearance in a traditional tournament came at the 2024 Open Championship, where Woods missed the cut and then stepped back to recover from back surgery and an Achilles injury.
After that recovery period, Woods had begun steps towards another return, using the TGL indoor golf league to gain competitive rhythm. Woods played in that league last week, suggesting a gradual build-up, before the recent accident and legal issues changed the short-term outlook and schedule.
The PGA Tour released a public message backing Woods during this period away from regular play. The statement read: "Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course. But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and wellbeing. Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step."
The same message of support was echoed across the golfing community, as attention shifted from performance to welfare. With The Masters proceeding without one of its most successful players, focus now rests on Woods’ treatment plan, legal case and long-term recovery, rather than any timeline for a competitive return.
