'Tintu Luka will bring laurels for the country''

{image-PT Usha and Tintu_18062008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Kozhikode, Jun 18: Former sprint queen P T Usha today said her prodigy Tintu Luka would bring laurels for the country by winning a gold at the 12th IAAF World Junior Athletics Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, beginning from July 8.

''I am confident of her winning laurels for the country at the Poland meet while considering her recent performances,'' Usha, who lost a medal by a whisker at the Los Angeles Olympics, told newspersons here. Tintu, who won siliver in 800 m individual event in the Asian Junior Track and Field Meet that concluded at Jakarta on June 15 clocking 2:06.93, was undergoing an aggressive training schedule to achieve the goal, she said. Besides, Usha School of Athletics was planning to send Tintu, who also won a bronz in the 400 m in relay in Jakarta, to Infosys campus at Maysore for a rigorous training for 10 days before leaving for Bydgoszcz, she said.

However, she regretted that the lack of encouragement coming from the government agencies to the athlete despite her impressive performance in the Jakarta meet.

18-year Tintu, hailing from Karikkottakkari in the neigbouring district of Kannur, who was also present at the press meet, said her ultimate aim was to grab a gold at the 2012 Olympics.

Expressing happiness over her performance in Jakarta, Tintu said she would improve it at the Poland meet.

''However, my ultimate aim is a gold at the 2012 event,'' Tintu, who was also planning to pursue B Com, said.
