By Rishab V M

The 45th Chess Olympiad, organized by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), will be held from September 10 to 23, 2024, in Budapest, Hungary. This prestigious event marks Hungary's return as host for the first time since 1926, and it promises to be a thrilling competition.

A total of 193 teams will compete in the Open section, while 181 teams will battle it out in the Women's section across 11 rounds in the Swiss format. India, which earned bronze medals in both sections during the previous edition it hosted, returns with formidable lineups in both the open and women's categories.

Seeded second behind the USA in the Open section, India boasts some of the most promising chess talents in the world, including young stars like D. Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi. In the women's section, India, led by Dronavalli Harika, will aim for its first gold in an over-the-board Olympiad. Here's a look at the top five Indian players who will be in action at the 45th Chess Olympiad:

D Gukesh

D. Gukesh has quickly become one of the brightest young stars on the international chess stage. Currently ranked world No. 8, Gukesh's recent achievements have been nothing short of spectacular. Having qualified as the youngest-ever challenger for the World Chess Championship, Gukesh heads into the Olympiad as a key player for India's men's team.

His calculated strategies, aggressive play, and nerves of steel have made him a contender for the championship and a pivotal figure in India's Olympiad campaign. Gukesh will be eager to lead India to its first-ever gold medal at an on-the-board Olympiad, especially after their bronze finish in 2022.

Arjun Erigaisi

Arjun Erigaisi is another key player in India's Open section. With a current world ranking of No. 4, Arjun has emerged as India's new chess sensation. His meteoric rise in the past few years, particularly in open tournaments, has placed him on the brink of the elite 2800 Elo rating mark.

Arjun's precise and dynamic style of play has turned him into a formidable opponent, and his performance at the Olympiad could be crucial for India's pursuit of a gold medal. Having outshone many of his contemporaries in major events, Arjun's consistency and flair make him one to watch in Budapest.

R Praggnanandhaa

R. Praggnanandhaa, who has been a favorite in the Indian chess community, is another stalwart in the Indian Open team. Ranked world No. 12, Praggnanandhaa has already left a significant mark by beating World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen at the prestigious Norway Chess event.

Praggnanandhaa, known for his fearless attitude, will be a key player to watch. He has shown maturity beyond his years and will play a crucial role in ensuring India's hopes of securing a podium finish once again.

Dronavalli Harika

In the women's section, Dronavalli Harika will lead the Indian charge. A seasoned Grandmaster, Harika has been an essential figure in India's women's team for several years. Although India will be missing Koneru Humpy this time around, Harika's experience and leadership will be vital in securing success for the women's team.

Known for her solid and resilient gameplay, Harika's calm demeanor and consistent performance under pressure make her one of the most formidable players in the competition. Her experience could well be the driving force behind India's bid to go beyond their bronze medal finish in 2022.

R Vaishali

R. Vaishali has made significant strides in her chess career and is a new Grandmaster. Vaishali had an impressive outing at the Candidates' tournament, showing her capabilities against top-tier competition. As part of the women's team, her aggressive style of play and growing experience will be crucial to India's success.

With Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, and Tania Sachdev forming a strong team, Vaishali's presence provides the team with additional firepower. Her ability to hold her own in high-pressure games will be essential as India looks to build on their recent success.
