Training camp for CYG weightlifting probables begins at ASI

By Staff

Pune, May 22 (UNI) As many as 34 probables -- 16 boys and 18 girls -- have been shortlisted to undergo a training-cum-coaching camp in weight-lifting in preparation for the forthcoming 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG).

The camp, which got underway at the Army Sports Institute (ASI) here since May 20, also has four women probables for the Beijing Olympics.

Sqn Ldr B R Gulati (retd), interim secretary general of the Indian Weightlifting Federation, will monitor the camp till commencement of the CYG to be held in Pune from October 13 to 17.

Mr Gulati said seven boys and eight girls have reported for the camp and the rest are expected to join in a couple of days.

Asked about Karnataka lifter Paritosh Upadhyay, Mr Gulati said the lifter had tested positive in a random dope test carried out by Sports Authority of India (SAI) at Patiala recently.

Upadhyay, a medalist in the 77-kg weight category in the junior nationals held in Imphal, has been dropped for taking a banned drug, Mr Gulati informed.

For the present, two senior coaches -- D D Sharma and Lankey of ASI -- assisted by three other coaches from ASI, will put the probables through their paces at the camp, till the time the SAI takes a review of the panel of coaches on May 28. The senior coaches, on a long-term training plan, will be decided by SAI on directives of Union Sports Minister M S Gill.

It is also proposed to hold a mid-camp trial for all the trainees and other probables from the states who meet the minimum participation standards, Mr Gulati said.

The participants, he said, will have to undergo a dope test on arrival at ASI.

The Youth Games at Bangalore, to be held between July 22 to 29, will be useful to review the performance of the lifters. But, there would be no further trials after the Bangalore event, Mr Gulati said.

He said the final list of competitors for the CYG will be declared after the in-house trials of the short-listed trainees by August end.

India, Mr Gulati said, is aiming to garner 8 to 9 medals in this discipline at the CYG.
