TT Pair Sreeja Akula, Archana Kamath Win Women's Doubles Title at WTT Contender Lagos 2024

In a thrilling showdown at the WTT Contender Lagos 2024, India's Sreeja Akula and Archana Kamath triumphed in the women's doubles event in the Nigerian city on Sunday, June 23.

The Indian duo secured the title with a commanding 3-0 victory over fellow compatriots Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade 11-9, 11-6, 12-10.

Sreeja and Archana's path to the title was marked by a series of impressive performances. In the semifinals, they faced the Asian Games bronze medallists Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee.

The Indian pair showcased their prowess, winning the match decisively with scores of 11-7, 11-5, 12-10. Their dominance in the semifinal set the stage for an all-Indian final against Diya and Yashaswini.

Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade earned their spot in the final with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over China's Sun Sinan and Ding Yijie. The semifinal clash was intense, with Diya and Yashaswini overcoming the Chinese pair with scores of 14-12, 6-11, 11-6, and 11-7. However, they couldn't replicate their semifinal success in the final against Sreeja and Archana.

The triumph at Lagos is a significant milestone for Sreeja Akula and Archana Kamath, adding to their growing list of achievements in international table tennis. Their synergy on the court was evident throughout the tournament, culminating in their well-deserved victory in the final.

Sreeja Akula's impressive run doesn't end with the doubles title. She is also set to compete in the women's singles final, where she will face China's Ding Yijie, who is currently ranked World No. 504. Ding reached the final by defeating Ayhika Mukherjee in a closely contested match, winning 3-2 with scores of 11-7, 7-11, 11-2, 11-13, and 11-4.

The success of Indian players at the WTT Contender Lagos 2024 extends beyond the women's doubles. The Indian men's doubles team, consisting of Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar, also advanced to the final.

They secured their place in the summit clash with a straightforward 3-0 victory over China's Kang Youde and Ning Xiankun, with set scores of 11-4, 11-9, and 11-5. Harmeet and Manav will face local favorites Azeez Solanke and Olajide Omotayo in the final.
