TTFI confirms UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships to begin from August 16

The UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships will get underway on Sunday with a massive field of around 1,900 players set to compete across 12 different categories.

The tournament brings together nearly all of India's leading senior men's and women's players, along with some of the country's most promising young paddlers, as it will be played at The Sports Hub in Kanpur.

The championships, however, begin against the backdrop of uncertainty surrounding the sport's administration in India. The Sports Ministry suspended the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) on Wednesday, citing, among other issues, its failure to conduct elections within the prescribed timeline.

The TTFI has maintained that it enjoys autonomy under the Olympic Charter and has urged the Sports Ministry to keep the suspension order in abeyance while reconsidering the decision.

Despite the administrative dispute, preparations for the competition have continued as planned. According to the TTFI, approximately 4,200 matches will be played during the eight-day championships, beginning with the group-stage contests and continuing through the knockout rounds.

Young Paddlers Take Centre Stage

The opening group matches in the Under-11 and Under-13 boys' and girls' categories began on Saturday, giving India's youngest competitors an opportunity to experience national-level competition.

For the Under-11 participants, the championships represent an important early step in their development. The tournament will allow them to gain competitive experience, sharpen their technique and understand the demands of playing at a higher level.

The Under-13 players will also be looking to make their mark, while the Under-15 competitions are expected to provide a clearer indication of the country's emerging talent. The Under-17 and Under-19 categories, meanwhile, are likely to produce some of the most competitive encounters as players attempt to establish themselves as future senior stars.

Senior Stars Ready for Action

The senior men's and women's singles competitions remain the biggest attractions of the championships. Almost all of India's leading players are expected to compete, with Harmeet Desai the notable absentee from the senior field.

The presence of several talented youngsters could make the senior events particularly interesting. Players from the Under-17 ranks have been making rapid progress, and the championships could provide another opportunity for them to test themselves against more established opposition.

With the knockout stages approaching, the singles competitions are expected to produce closely fought contests as India's top paddlers battle for national ranking points and honours.

4,200 Matches Across Eight Days

The scale of the tournament underlines its importance on the domestic calendar. Around 1,900 players will participate, with approximately 4,200 matches scheduled from the group stages through to the knockouts.

The competition department will use Stag equipment throughout the championships, including 24 tables, playing flooring and competition balls.

While the TTFI's administrative dispute with the Sports Ministry remains unresolved, the focus inside the venue will be firmly on the paddlers. With elite players competing alongside India's next generation, the championships promise a comprehensive showcase of the country's table tennis talent.
