Dutch captain Van Persie's wonder goal, with a diving header from 17 yards, was hailed by many as one of the best goals in World Cup history.

The Manchester United striker, fed with an aerial 45-yard cross from Daley Blind, raced ahead and with diving at full length headed the ball into the net over a stunned Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

This goal of Van Persie's is the best so far in this edition of World Cup. These are still early days in the tournament with just two days into it and we could see some other astounding goal but it would be tough to beat this one.

Many on Twitter hailed Van Persie as the "Flying Dutchman". There were plenty of images of Van Persie mocked up as Superman, Batman, WWE wrestler Eddie Guerrero and flying in the skies of Brazil over the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.

Here are some of the tweets in praise of Van Persie.
