Beijing, Sept 4: A court in China has given jail terms to two men involved in a knife attack on former China striker Chen Yongqiang, local media reported today.
The Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court sentenced Wang Weijian and Cao Wei to seven and five years' jail respectively for attacking Chen in a restaurant in the southern city of Shenzhen in 2005, the Beijing News reported.
The attack, which left Chen with knife wounds to his head, back and left arm, occurred after a scuffle between the player and Cao outside the restaurant earlier that night, the paper said, citing court documents.
Chen, 28, currently a midfielder with Super League club Shenzhen Shangqingyin, is the latest Chinese player to be involved in violent attacks in recent years.
In October last year, Dalian Shide midfielder Quan Lei suffered a near-fatal knife attack by several men as he got out of his car on the way to visit his father.
Chen's former team-mate Lu Bofei was badly injured when he was stabbed several times by a group of men on a bridge in September last year while making his way home after a night out.
