Bangkok, August 7: Five Indian men pugilists ensured themselves and the nation of at least bronze medals at the ongoing U19 Asian Boxing Championships 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand after powering their way into the semi-finals with commanding quarterfinal wins on Thursday (August 7).

The victorious five – Shivam (55kg), Mausam Suhag (65kg), Rahul Kundu (75kg), Gaurav (85kg), and Hemant Sangwan (90kg) – will now join their seven female counterparts in the last four, assuring India of at least 12 medals from the U19 category alone.

The prestigious U19 and U22 Asian Boxing Championships, being held concurrently in Bangkok, offers a vital stage for the country’s young boxing talents to test themselves against the best in Asia. India has fielded a 40-member squad – 20 boxers in each age group – blending proven performers and promising newcomers.

With 13 medals already confirmed in the U22 division, including five finalists, India’s overall haul looks poised to make a major impact in the continental competition.

Commanding Performances in the Ring

Shivam set the tone for the day in the 55kg category by overpowering Uzbekistan’s Abdulaziz Abdunazarov in a clinical 5:0 unanimous decision win.

Mausam Suhag, competing in the 65kg division, showed grit and composure as he edged past Kyrgyzstan’s Mukhammed Alimbekov in a tight 3:2 split decision.

Rahul Kundu delivered perhaps the most dominant performance of the day, forcing a stoppage against South Korea’s Eunjo Jeong in the 75kg bout.

Gaurav then followed with a hard-earned victory against Kuang-Yao Cheng of Chinese Taipei in the 85kg division to continue India’s momentum.

Rounding off the winning spree, Hemant Sangwan got the better of Uzbekistan’s Muhammadrizo Siddikov in the 90kg category to secure a semifinal spot.

Close Miss in Super Heavyweight

India’s hopes for a clean sweep in the men’s quarterfinals were dashed when Krish fell short in a nail-biting 90+kg clash against Iran’s Abbas Gharshasbi. Despite a valiant effort, he narrowly missed joining the five semifinalists.

Bright Medal Prospects

With 12 U19 boxers and 13 U22 boxers already assured of medals, India’s young boxing brigade continues to shine on the Asian stage. The upcoming semifinal clashes promise further excitement as the pugilists aim to turn those bronze guarantees into gold.
