UFC 292 Results: Sean O’Malley Dethrones Bantamweight King Aljamain Sterling as Zhang Weili Defends Title

Boston, August 20: Sean O'Malley dethroned Bantamweight king Aljamain Sterling in the main event of UFC 292: Sterling vs. O'Malley, which took place at the sold out TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday (August 19).

UFC 292 witnessed only 4 of 12 fights ending in finishes, including the main event with two KO or TKOs and two submission finishes, which also earned the fight of the night award.

The The Ultimate Fighter: Team McGregor vs Team Chandler Lightweight final that saw Kurt Holobaugh defeat Austin Hubbard via submission earned the fight of the night, while headliners Zhang Weili and O'Malleu took home an extra USD50K as performance bonuses.

In front of a screaming Bostonian fan base, "Suga" O'Malley landed a resounding right punch that dropped UFC Bantamweight champion Sterling in the second round.

O'Malley and Sterling played a crafty, testing-out first round, but when that punch landed, O'Malley swarmed and the referee stopped the fight, crowning a new UFC bantamweight champion in O'Malley.

Following the win, O'Malley said: "It feels right. Honestly, this was the most nervous I've ever been for a fight. In my eyes, Aljamain Sterling is the best bantamweight of all time.

"I was nervous but I never lost confidence because I know what I possess in this right hand! It only takes one mistake against me. I don't even know if that was a mistake, I'm just that good! This is just the beginning of the Suga era. I'm running this until 2035, baby!"

In the co-main event, China's first and enduring champion, UFC women's strawweight champion Weili defended her belt against the surging No. 5 ranked Amanda Lemos in what was a one-sided affair across all areas.

Zhang's takedowns and timing secured her massive control time, and her ground and pound earned her the record for the largest strike differential in UFC women's history (288-21).

After the scorecards were read, giving her the unanimous decision, Zhang said, "My name is Zhang Weili. I'm from China. Do you remember me?! Boston, this feels like home. The energy you bring to me is unbelievable.

"I'm training so hard every day - hard training, easy fight. I'm not surprised because I have a great team. All the coaches gave me the techniques to make my fight like this."

Also on the main card, Ian Machado Garry dominated Neil Magny in a welterweight bout to earn the scores across three rounds after Mario Bautista and Marlon Vera did the same to their respective opponents Da'Mon Blacksheer and Pedro Munhoz in bantamweight bouts.

In the preliminary card, Kurt Holobaugh defeated Austin Hubbard in one of the TUF finals, while Brad Katona defeated Cody Gibson via decision in the bantamweight final before Gregory Rodrigues stopped Denis Tiuliulin, and Brad Tavares edged the returning Chris Weidman at Middleweight.

In the early prelims, Karine Silva claimed a first-round submission win over Maryna Moroz in a women's flyweight bout that opened the event before Natalia Silva and Andre Petroski earned decision wins. Here is a look at the final results of UFC 292.
