UFC Charlotte 2023 Results: Almeida enters heavyweight top 10 after submission victory over Rosenstruik

Charlotte, May 14: Jailton Almeida entered the top 10 in the heavyweight division following a submission win over Jairzinho Rozenstruik in main event of UFC Charlotte 2023: Rozenstruik vs. Almeida at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday (May 13).

The Spectrum Center witnessed seven of eleven fights end in stoppages, including the main event and the three others bouts on the main card as well as three on the preliminary card with three fighters taking home an extra USD50K as performance bonuses.

Main-eventer Almeida along with Ian Machado Garry, who also fought on the main card, and Matt Brown, who closed the prelims, were awarded performance of the night bonuses for stoppage wins in their respective bouts.

In the main event, Almeida took down Rozenstruik in less than a minute, patiently worked to climb into mount. Almeida punched and threatened with a choke that he finally laced up, collecting the tapout. The fifth straight finish launches Almeida into the Top Ten.

After the win, Almeida said, "For my first main event to end like this, I'm very happy. They said this guy was the most dangerous in the division, that he was going to knock me out, but all he did was slap me a few times. You know, Khabib actually won like this, and my style is why I'm here."

In the co-main event, ranked light heavyweights Anthony Smith and Johnny Walker showed tremendous respect for each other throughout three rounds. Walker's low kicks landed while Smith found a few right hands.

Walker's persistence paid dividends in the third round which earned him the decision, his third victory in a row. Following the bout, Walker had a message for the light heavyweight king Jamahal Hil.

"I wanted to prove myself. I didn't want to finish quickly, I wanted to fight three rounds with a high level to show I can defend, I can block, I can fight. (To UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill, Octagon-side, he said) See you at the top. I'm coming!" said Almeida.

Also on the main card, Ian Machado Garry picked up the biggest win of his career by dispatching Daniel Rodriguez in the opening round. Garry took the fight to Rodriguez, dictated the range and pace, then caught him with a head kick that spelled the end.

Plus, Carlos Ulberg was patient in his clash with Ihor Potieria. Once he got the timing down, Ulberg threw a check left hook that took Ihor off his feet. The follow-up blows came quickly, and the TKO gave Ulberg four straight victories, three of them in the first round.

In the main card opener, Alex Morono claimed a second-round submission win over Tim Means in a welterweight bout. Meanwhile, veteran Matt Brown tied the UFC knockout record (13) with a first-round knock out of Court McGee in a welterweight bout that closed the preliminary card.

The prelims also saw two more stoppages as Tainara Lisboa claimed a third-round submission win over Jessica-Rose Clark in a women's bantamweight bout that opened the event. Plus, Bryan Battle finished Gabe Green in 14 second of a welterweight bout.
