Bengaluru, August 31: Conor McGregor confirmed that he would return to the UFC after his loss in Saturday's blockbuster main event against boxing great Floyd Mayweather in the squared circle.
McGregor has added more excitement to the fans by saying that he would fight Nate Diaz and complete their trilogy when he makes the most awaited return to the octagon.
One catch to all this is, the third fight would have to be at 155 pounds. That's according to McGregor, who holds the UFC title at that weight and pointed out that it was "fair" of him to fight the first two times against Diaz at 170.
"I'm the 155-pound champion. I faced him at 170, he beat me, then I rematched him at 170, I beat him," McGregor said (via bjpenn.com).
"Now I'm the 155-pound world champion, now if he wants that fight, he must come down.
"So that's a fair trade."
McGregor's manager Audie Attar earlier confirmed the same stating the Irishman has his heart set on a third and deciding bout with Diaz.
"He wants that trilogy (with Diaz)," Attar said while speaking to MMAjunkie.
This potential bout is seriously cause for concern to the UFC especially for the lightweight and welterweight divisions as they haven't got a proper title opportunity for close to year now.
The title was last defended in November last year when Conor created history by beating then lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez via knockout to become a double champion.
Sighting the upset it could cause in the two divisions and the physical toll that his biggest star took in their first two fights against Diaz, UFC President Dana White played down the potential fight earlier, despite a guaranteed gigantic windfall the possible match could bring.
Former UFC middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen also hinted of the rubber match with the youngest Diaz brother is on the cards for 'The Notorious'.
"I think [McGregor] is going to fight in the UFC," Sonnen told Ariel Helwani during an appearance on The MMA Hour earlier this week.
"A little inside information, I think it's Nate Diaz next."
So we just need to wait for official confirmation from the UFC of the McGregor-Diaz triology.
