UFC Fight Night 221 results and recap: Dvalishvili dominates Yan for unanimous decision

The sold out venue witnesses six of thirteen fights end in stoppages as seven fights including the headliner went the distance.

Las Vegas, March 12: Merab Dvalishvili was relentless in victory over former Bantamweight champion Petr Yan in the main event of UFC Fight Night 221: Yan vs. Dvalishvili at the Theater at Virgin Hotels in Paradise, Nevada on Saturday (March 11).

The sold out venue witnesses six of thirteen fights end in stoppages as seven fights including the headliner went the distance. Five of the six finishes were submission wins, while one was a TKO in the co-main event.

The light heavyweight main card opener between Vitor Petrino and Anton Turkalj was awarded the fight of the night, while Davey Grant and Bruno Silva, who secured submission wins in the preliminary card, also pocketed an extra USD50K as performance bonuses.

Top bantamweights No. 2 Petr Yan and No. 3 Merab Dvalishvili blasted out of their corners from the opening bell, with Yan sniping strikes and Dvalishvili relentlessly shooting.

As the fight progressed, Dvalishvili added punches to his pressure and racked up the record for the most takedown attempts - 49.

Simply relentless, Dvalishvili earned the unanimous decision and said, "I am so proud now! It was very personal for me, but I tried so hard to keep it professional. And now, I was able to show my work. Petr called me 'zero'. Who's 'zero' now?! My style is difficult, I welcome anybody!"

Co-main Event: Volkov stops Romanov

Ranked heavyweights No. 8 Alexander Volkov and No. 14 Alexandr Romanov went right to work in their co-main event bout.

Romanov made Volkov defend the takedown early, but got punished for it. Volkov landed a damaging right hand, and the referee called off the action due to unanswered ground and pound.

Volkov scored his 24th KO and said, "I knew he was going to use all his strength in that takedown so I had to keep moving forward. I'd like to thank everyone who helped me with my wrestling. I'm ready for whoever UFC gives me. Call me out!"

Mario Bautista made it four straight wins and three straight finishes as he dominated Guido Cannetti in the grappling exchanges before securing a submission win in the first round. Also, Nikita Krylov submitted Ryan Spann near the end of a frantic light heavyweight contest

Meanwhile, Jonathan Martinez and Vitor Petrino took their fights the distance to earn decision wins in their respective bouts against Said Nurmagomedov and Anton Turkalj.

Davey Grant snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after he choked out Raphael Assuncao in the final seconds of the third round of a bantamweight bout after middleweight Josh Fremd spoiled the promotional debut of Sedriques Dumas, securing his own first UFC victory via a submission win.

Also, Bruno Silva made a successful return to the Octagon after nearly two years away from action, and collected a second-round submission win over Tyson Nam in a flyweight bout.

Karl Williams, Ariane Lipski, Victor Henry and Carlston Harris all claimed decision wins in their respective bouts against Lukasz Brzeski, JJ Aldrich, Tony Gravely and Jared Gooden.
