The stacked 14-fight card saw seven fights end in stoppages - six knockout (KO) or technical knockout (TKO) and 1 submission finish as seven fights, including the headliner, went the distance.
Also, the welterweight fight between Randy Brown and Nicolas Dalby bagged the fight of the night award, while two more fighters - Zhang Mingyang and Malcolm Wellmaker took home an extra USD 50K as performance bonus for their first round stoppage wins. Here is a look at the recap of UFC Kansas City:
No. 7 ranked UFC welterweight contender Machado Garry shut down much of the game plan and offense of No. 13 ranked Prates throughout the first three rounds of a tactical main event matchup.
Prates began to come back in the fourth, and in the final minute of the fifth, he got a knockdown, but Garry held on and got the victory after all three judges scored in his favour on the scorecards.
Following the win, Garry said, "I was conscious of every moment on how dangerous that man is. I have nothing but respect for everything he and his team do, I said it to him after the fight.
"That man hits like a truck. He's been on a tear, but I told everyone I was going to do, I was going to class him, and I believe I did that. My entire goal in this game is to prove that I'm one of the most game fighters that's ever existed.
"I've got the fighting Irish in my blood, in my soul, my history. in two weeks' time, I'm flying to Canada, I'm the official backup for the (UFC welterweight) world title fight, and I'm next in line for that world title!"
In the co-main event, perennial light heavyweight Anthony Smith made his final walk to the Octagon of his long, illustrious career against China's own rising star Zhang Mingyang.
Smith came out strong and forced Zhang on the back foot, putting on an entertaining opener, but the tide turned quickly. Zhang cut Smith with a big elbow and went on the offense, smothering takedowns, and delivering a brutal TKO before the first round ended.
Zhang earns his way into the top 15 rankings with the victory, and he said, "Hey, boo me again. Let me hear that. I know you don't know who I am, but even if you don't know, now you know! Dana, you tell me, who is next?!" Here is a look at the final results of UFC on ESPN 66:
