Also, the lightweight bout featuring Daniel Zellhuber and Francisco Prado bagged the fight of the night, while Brian Ortega and Manuel Torres pocketed an extra USD50K as performance bonus. Here is a look at the recap and results of UFC Fight Night: Moreno vs. Royval:
In the main event, an epic flyweight battle was delivered by No. 1 ranked Brandon Moreno and No. 3 ranked Brandon Royval in their rematch on Mexican soil in front of a gate recorded 21,546 audience.
Moreno looked sharp early; the two strikers' contrasting styles brought them close into the fourth round, where Royval's combinations evened it up. The fifth round became an absolute banger, which sent a very close fight to the judges, who scored the bout in favor of Royval by split decision.
After edging his compatriot, Royval said, "I'm a third generation Mexican(-American), I know that doesn't count, but the only reason I get through this is because I have that Mexican heart like all you guys.
"I'm the realest one in this division. Everyone wants to grab me all day. Speaking of - I hear that (UFC flyweight champion Alexandre) Pantoja's in the building. Let's run that back!"
In the co-main event, No. 2 ranked featherweight Yair Rodriguez and No. 4 ranked Ortega ran it back in an absolute thriller that did not need the five rounds it was granted.
Rodriguez was on fire with knockdowns in the first round; Ortega survived by relying on his grappling and made it dominant in the second. At the start of the third, Ortega surged with a clinch, a trip, and a triangle choke that forced Rodriguez to tap.
Following the submission win, Ortega said, "We won! It's a wrap. I've been training super hard. I got my life together, I'm not being an idiot anymore. I'm focused, I'm walking a straight line. We trained so hard for three months."
Also on the main card, lightweights Daniel Zelluber and Francisco Prado went the distance to land the fight of the night with the former earning the points on the judges scorecard after Yazmin Jauregui outworked Sam Hughes in a women's strawweight bout.
Plus, in a lightweight bout that opened the main card, Manuel Torres claimed first-round submission win over Chris Duncan moments after Raoni Barcelos did exactly the same against Cristian Quinonez in the third round of a bantamweight bout that closed the preliminary card.
The prelims also saw Edgar Chairez and Ronaldo Rodriguez claim submission wins over Daniel Lacerda and Denys Bondar in their respective flyweight bouts, while Jesus Aguilar, Fares Ziam and Felipe dos Santos earned split decision wins before Muhammad Naimov opened card with a TKO.
