UFC Vegas 73 results and recap: Brilliant Mackenzie Dern outclasses gritty Angela Hill for unanimous decision

Las Vegas, May 21: Mackenzie Dern outclassed Angela Hill in the main event of UFC Vegas 73: Dern vs. Hill at the UFC Apex Facility in Las Vegas on Saturday (May 20).

The 12-fight card saw six fights end in stoppages and six go the distance. Among the six stoppage wins, five were technical knockouts, including the co-main event of the show between Anthony Hernandez and Edmen Shahbazyan.

The main event fight between Dern and Hill was awarded the fight of the night bonus, while Viacheslav Borshchev and Diego Ferreira pocketed an extra USD50K for their respective stoppage wins on the undercard.

It was all-action in the main event between ranking strawweights No. 8 ranked Dern and No. 14 ranked Hill. Dern was willing to stand toe-to-toe and strike with Hill, and she was successful with knockdowns and throws off her combinations.

Hill stayed in the fight with gritty determination, but it was all Dern through to the final bell. Dern said, "It felt good. This was a hard test for me. I just feel happy to be back in the win column. Angela was a tough opponent, she's fought all the best so I knew it wasn't going to be easy.

"I tried to get the submission to catch up to Charles "Do Bronx" (Oliveira) with the most submissions (record in UFC), but I didn't have enough time. I don't know what Rose it up to... or revenge with Yan... give me someone in the top ten."

Exciting middleweights Shahbazyan and Hernandez put on a frantic first round. "Fluffy" Hernandez mounted his aggression in the second round, and got the TKO early in the third.

Following the third-round stoppage, Hernandez said, "Just listen to your coaches. I've been listening to them and trusting them for a long time, and it keeps paying off. Sometimes I'm a slow starter, and I just need to get kick-started. He kick-started me."

Also on the main card, Loopy Goodinez earned a decision win over Emily Ducote in a catchweight bout after Joaquin Buckley claimed a second-round stoppage over Andre Fialho in a welterweight bout.

Plus, Diego Ferreira defeated Michael Johnson via a second-round stoppage in the lightweight bout that opened the main card after Viacheslav Borshchev claimed another second-round finish against Maheshate in a lightweight bout that closed the preliminary card.

Also on the prelims, Gilbert Urbina and Natalia Silva claimed stoppage wins in their respective bouts, while Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Rodrigo Nascimento, Chase Hooper and Themba Gorimbo all earned decision wins.
