Las Vegas, December 11: Song Yadong got closer to bantamweight title contention following dominant win over Chris Gutierrez in the main event of UFC Vegas 83: Song vs. Gutierrez at the UFC Apex Facility in Las Vegas on Sunday (December 10).
The 11-fight card saw 6 fights end in stoppages, while five fights, including the main event, went the distance for the decision. Among the 6 stoppage wins, 5 were either knockouts or technical knockouts and one was a submission finish.

While there was no fight of the night in UFC Vegas 83, also known as UFC Fight Night 233 , four fighters - HyunSung Park, Tim Elliot, Nasrat Haqparast and Khalil Rontree Jr - pocketed an extra USD50K as performance bonuses for their respective stoppage wins on the card. Here is the recap:
In the main event, China's No. 7-ranked Song welcomed No. 15-ranked Gutierrez into a grueling five-round firefight. Using his experience and versatility, Song was able to fluster Gutierrez and control the pace from bell to bell.
Gutierrez stayed in the thick of it and controlled distance, but couldn't mount any successful offence as Song earned the points on the judges scorecard for a unanimous decision win.
After the win, Song said, "I really wanted to fight in China, that's my home. It's been four years. Thanks to Chris for taking the fight. In the top 15, no one else took the fight. I'm coming for the belt.
"Next one: Petr (Yan), sign the contract. Tomorrow I'm going back to train. To Chinese fans, I'm sorry I didn't knock him out. This guy controlled the distance very well, I learned a lot from this fight."
In the co-main event, No. 8 ranked light heavyweight Anthony Smith stepped in on late notice against No. 11 Khalil Rountree, a massively important fight for both men in future title contention.
After a thundering two stanzas, Rountree's striking proved to be on point. He first wobbled, then dropped Smith, getting the referee stoppage in the third round of the light heavyweight bout.
Following the stoppage, Rountree said, "This is what I've been working for. I came in here with high hopes that I'd get a really good performance. Las Vegas is my home. It's the home of the UFC. In my mind, it's time to have a champion at home. I'm in the top ten now, and the only thing I want to do is fight Alex Pereira."
Also on the main card, late stand-in and heavy veteran No. 11 flyweight Tim Elliott sent No. 12 flyweight Su Mudaerji back to the drawing board with a first round submission by arm triangle before Haqparast stopped Jamie Mullarkey in the first round of a lightweight bout.
Plus, No. 14-ranked middleweight Andre Muniz denied Junyong Park a climb into the rankings with a narrow victory by split decision, his smothering takedown and control game swaying the judges over Park's striking damage.
On the prelims, China's veteran welterweight Song Kenan went toe-to-toe with Kevin Jousset in a three-round banger, with each delivering damage. Jousset pulled ahead with a record number of significant strikes landed in the welterweight division to earn the unanimous decision.
Road to UFC Season 1 flyweight winner HyunSung Park made his UFC debut with a patient and well-rounded game plan to overwhelm Shannon Ross with liver shots, punches, and knees for the second round TKO.
With the result, Park remained undefeated and said, "My conditioning was off, I was taking it slow, trying to take my time. I was lucky tonight. That was just instinct. I hit him and the damage was there. I want to fight as much as I can."
Also, Japan phenom Tatsuro Taira remained undefeated against Carlos Hernandez with another incredible performance that ended with a finish, this time a TKO, his first in UFC.
Following the stoppage, Taira said, "I'm very happy! I always ask for a ranker, it didn't happen this time, but of course next time I should be ready for a ranker, right? Where's (Muhammad) Mokaev?!"
Plus, Talita Alencar and Luana Santos earned decision wins in their respective bouts, while Steve Garcia stopped Melquizael Costa in the second round of a lightweight bout. Here is a look at the final results of UFC on ESPN+ 91 or UFC Fight Night 233:
