Ukar, Yamini claim gold in weightlifting

Pune, Aug 30 (UNI) The junior lifters, being trained at the Army Sports Institute (ASI), Ghorpadi, representing various districts, dominated the Chhatrapati Maharaj state level 'Test Games' at the sprawling Shivaji Chhtarapati sports city complex Mahalunge-Balewadi on the second day here today.

Ukar C B, donning the colours of Satara district, overcame a stiff competition in the men's 62 kg weight category by lifting 110 kg in snatch and 148 kg in the clean and jerk (totaling 258 kg) and claimed the gold.

Tushar Sakpal of Jalgaon mustered a total of 222 kg (97+125) to take the silver, while Ishwar Imple of Nasik bagged the bronze with a total of 165 kg (75+90) to his credit.

Unseeded Sridhar Kapse of Nanded brought off the stunning upset of the day by toppling the apple cart of second seeded Shanvi Navgire of Nagpur 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, while Vishal Salvi of Nashik posted a thrilling win 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 13-11 over third seeded Nakul Rawal of Pune and breezed into the last eight stage of the boys singles event in the tennis competition.

Top seed Om Dalvi sent Rusabh Ranawat packing in straight sets 6-0, 6-2, while sixth seed Amit Deshmukh of Nanded outplayed Aditya Vyas of Nasik in identical fashion 6-0, 6-2 and also made to the quarters.

The girls section, however, saw one-side affair as Tanya Gosavi put it across Manisha Verma of Nagpur 6-2, 6-2.

Manasi Fulzule of Nashik put out a spirited Padmaja Gawande of Pune 6-0, 0-6 and 10-4 in a long-drawn battle and made to the last eight stage in the bargain.
