Chennai, Aug 22: In a thrilling start to Ultimate Table Tennis 2024, defending champions Athlead Goa Challengers emerged victorious against the debutant Jaipur Patriots, securing a 9-6 win at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Thursday (August 22).
The victory was spearheaded by Harmeet Desai and Yangzi Liu, who showcased their prowess and resilience, particularly in the mixed doubles round.

Athlead Goa Challengers won the toss and chose to serve first in the Men's Singles match. Their captain, Harmeet Desai, started the campaign with a blistering performance, racing to a 5-0 lead and claiming the first game with an 11-2 scoreline.
However, Jaipur Patriots' Cho Seungmin quickly turned the tide, dominating the second game 11-1 and carrying his momentum into the decider to win the match 2-1, putting the debutants ahead.
Yangzi Liu, however, quickly restored parity for Goa Challengers in the Women's Singles. Facing off against the experienced Suthasini Sawettabut, Liu delivered a flawless performance, winning all three games and putting her team back in the lead.
The crucial Mixed Doubles match saw Harmeet Desai team up with Liu, marking their first tie together. The duo exhibited exceptional coordination, storming through the first game 11-1. Though Suthasini and Ronit Bhanja of Jaipur Patriots mounted a comeback in the second game, the Goa Challengers pair held their nerve, clinching the final game to win the match and extend their lead.
In the Men's Singles, veteran Mihai Bobocica made his much-anticipated league debut at 37, representing Athlead Goa Challengers. Despite trailing early on, the two-time Olympian displayed his experience and tenacity, securing a 2-1 victory against Ronit Bhanja, which propelled his team to an unassailable lead and secured the tie win.
The final match of the tie (Women's Singles) featured Yashaswini Ghorpade of Athlead Goa Challengers against Nithyashree Mani of Jaipur Patriots. This match provided the first Golden Point of the IndianOil UTT 2024 season, which Mani capitalized on to win the game 2-1. Despite this late success for the Jaipur Patriots, the tie had already swung decisively in favour of the reigning champions.
With their opening win, Athlead Goa Challengers have set the tone for the rest of the tournament. Debutants Ahmedabad SG Pipers will look to make their mark when they kick off their campaign against Puneri Paltan Table Tennis tomorrow at 17:00. The day's doubleheader will conclude with PBG Bengaluru Smashers taking on hosts Chennai Lions.
