J.J. Spaun Clinches First Major Title At U.S. Open Amidst Challenging Conditions
J.J. Spaun secured his first major title with a thrilling win at the U.S. Open. The American golfer overcame challenging conditions, including a flooded course and a 90-minute rain delay, to achieve a two-shot victory over Robert MacIntyre. Spaun began the final round trailing Sam Burns by one shot but initially struggled, recording five bogeys in his first six holes.
MacIntyre set the clubhouse target at one-over par with an impressive two-under 68, closing a seven-shot gap from the start of the day. Despite early setbacks, Spaun made a remarkable comeback after the weather delay, as others faltered on the wet course. He sank two long-range birdies on the back nine and took the lead with a birdie on the 17th hole.

Spaun's performance was highlighted by a spectacular 64-foot birdie putt on the final hole, resulting in a two-over 72 that brought him to one-under for the weekend. He was the only player to finish under par at Oakmont, known for its difficulty. Notably, Spaun also achieved a bogey-free round with his four-under 66 on Thursday.
Reflecting on his performance, Spaun said, "I don't think I did keep my composure with all the bad breaks I was getting [on the front nine]. I just tried to dig deep, hit some good shots." He credited his experience from The Players for helping him manage the delay and maintain focus during critical moments.
At one point during the back nine, five players were tied for the lead at one over par. Tyrrell Hatton faltered on his last two holes while Viktor Hovland recovered from a poor start to finish third at three over par. Scottie Scheffler ended tied for seventh at four-over alongside Jon Rahm and Burns.
Xander Schauffele finished tied for 12th after being two shots further back. Earlier in the day, Rory McIlroy concluded his tournament positively with a score of 67. McIlroy has now completed rounds of 67 or lower ten times at this event—more than any other player.
Spaun expressed pride in his resilience throughout his career despite challenges along the way. "I've always had aspirations and dreams," he shared about achieving this milestone victory after uncertainty about reaching such heights months ago.
The tournament saw many top players struggle against Oakmont's notorious difficulty level but ultimately showcased Spaun's determination as he emerged victorious amidst tough competition and adverse conditions alike.
