Varanasi Zone's Geeta Rai shines on Day 1

Lucknow, Nov 11 (UNI) Geeta Rai of Varanasi Zone Police won two golds on the opening day of the 57th UP Police Athletics Championship, which commenced here today at the 35th battalion PAC ground.

Geeta first bagged the gold in 1500 meter women's race clocking the distance in 5 min 17.72 sec leaving behind Lalita of Meerut in the second place, while she fetched her second gold in Discus throw in which she threw the disc to a distance of 22.55 meters. Karishma Gupta of Gorakhpur claimed the second spot with 21.71 metres distance.

In the men's events, Shashi Prakash of Allahabad zone won the top place of 1500 metres race he covered the distance taking only 4 min 03.64 sec, while his zone mate Sunil Kumar won the gold of Iron Ball throw event. Sunil threw the ball to a distance of 16 metres.

His compatriat Deepak Kumar of PAC West zone legged behind by 2.19 meters and remained in the second place.

Pushpendra Singh of PAC Central zone clinched the gold in men's long jump competitions by jumping 7.58 metres, Meerut zone's Sunil remain satisfied claiming the second place of the same event.

Earlier, Additional Director General of Police (PAC) P P S Siddhu inaugurated the meet.
