Vaughan may not make it to England squad for West Indies series

By Super Admin

London, Apr.29 (ANI): Michael Vaughan is unlikely to make it to the England team that is to play the West Indies when the squad is named on Wednesday morning.

According to The Telegraph, the selectors have looked to reward form rather than past records, and this should be good news for Ian Bell, who is averaging 75 this season, and Ravi Bopara, who last week became the first Englishman to win a man-of-the-match award at the Indian Premier League. The losers in this shake-up would appear to be Vaughan, who has yet to pass 30 in three first-class innings for Yorkshire and MCC, and Owais Shah, who has spent the past fortnight on the bench for the Delhi Daredevils in South Africa.

Chairman of the ECB selection committee, Geoff Miller, said: "There is a hell of a lot of international cricket to be played this summer and the team is sure to develop as we go along."

The selection committee has to also decide on its most potent bowling combination for the series.

With all-rounder Andrew Flintoff injured, the selectors have been forced to decide who will join James Anderson and Stuart Broad for the third seamer's position.

The promising wild cards are Mark Davies, Robbie Joseph and Charlie Shreck. The choice could boil down to a pair of tall right-armers from the north of England.

Sajid Mahmood has a reputation for flakiness and inaccuracy, while Graham Onions has been out of the pecking order for a while. So while one of these men will probably be included in England's 12-man party, due to be named at 10am, whoever gets the nod is likely to carry the drinks.

England squad (probable): AJ Strauss (captain), AN Cook, IR Bell, KP Pietersen, PD Collingwood, RS Bopara, MJ Prior (wk), SCJ Broad, GP Swann, SJ Harmison, JM Anderson, SI Mahmood. (ANI)
