Max Verstappen from Red Bull remains optimistic about his chances in the Formula One world championship, despite acknowledging McLaren's drivers as the current favourites. As a four-time world champion, Verstappen is positioned third in the standings before the Spanish Grand Prix. He trails leader Oscar Piastri by 25 points but is the only non-McLaren driver to have won a race this season, with victories at the Japanese and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix.
McLaren's dominance is evident as they lead by 172 points in the constructors' championship. Verstappen, however, maintains his belief in securing a fifth world title, even though some races have been less enjoyable for him this season. "It's not that I don't believe," Verstappen stated. "I just rock up to the track and I do the best I can every single weekend. I don't need to believe in it. Fully or not. I know that every time that I go out there, I do the best I can."

Verstappen approaches each race with simplicity, focusing on maximising his car's potential. "If that's with a car that is capable of P5, I will put it P5. If it's capable of winning, I'll win," he explained. This straightforward approach allows him more free time outside racing and keeps him excited when they are competitive. Despite some positive moments this year, there have been races where they struggled with pace.
The McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris still consider Verstappen a strong contender for the title. Piastri commented, "I don't think he can be counted out." He noted that Red Bull has been competitive at several circuits and continues to develop their car's performance. Norris added that racing against Verstappen every weekend proves his competitiveness.
Piastri believes that despite McLaren's stronger weekends, Red Bull has shown genuine competitiveness across various tracks. He emphasised that Max is still very much in contention for the championship due to their ongoing improvements. Norris echoed these sentiments by highlighting Verstappen's consistent podium finishes and race wins.
Norris remarked on Verstappen's victory over them at Imola as evidence of his speed and skill. "We're racing Max every weekend," he said. "He's been on the podium several times. He's won races." This acknowledgment from McLaren drivers underscores their respect for Verstappen's capabilities.
The competition remains fierce as teams continue to develop their cars throughout the season. While McLaren holds an advantage currently, Red Bull's efforts to enhance performance keep them in contention for both individual and team titles.
