Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix, narrowly beating Lando Norris in qualifying. This marks Verstappen's fourth consecutive year starting at the front in Suzuka. The McLaren duo of Norris and Oscar Piastri initially stayed ahead, but Verstappen's final lap clinched pole by just 0.012 seconds. "We tried the best we could to get the best possible balance with the car," Verstappen said.
The second part of qualifying faced a six-minute delay due to a fire at the 130R corner exit, despite officials watering the grass beforehand. Once resumed, Verstappen delivered a swift final lap to secure his grid position. Although Norris missed out on pole, he praised Verstappen's performance. "Max did an amazing lap," Norris commented, acknowledging his rival's skill.

Verstappen described the challenge of finding balance with the car throughout each session. He noted that every session involved small improvements leading up to his final flat-out lap. "Around here, being on the limit, or maybe just a little bit over the limit in places, is incredibly rewarding," he remarked about Suzuka's demanding track.
The new tarmac provided more grip, requiring drivers to commit even harder during their laps. Verstappen admitted uncertainty about keeping his car on track at times but felt fully committed during his last attempt. Reflecting on the season's start and this weekend's unexpected results, he found this pole position particularly special.
Norris expressed satisfaction with his own performance despite not securing pole. "I'm happy because I feel like I got everything out of the car today," he stated. He acknowledged they were at their limit but lacked enough to surpass Verstappen this time.
Piastri led after second practice but was left contemplating what might have been after his final lap didn't meet expectations. "The last lap just didn’t quite come together as I wanted," Piastri explained, noting tight margins and opportunities still available for race day.
