Verstappen Future With Red Bull Remains Uncertain Amid 2026 Contract Discussions
Red Bull director Laurent Mekies admitted that Max Verstappen’s long-term future with the team is uncertain beyond 2026. Verstappen holds a contract until the end of 2028, yet a performance clause could free the four-time world champion earlier, adding pressure during a challenging Formula One season for both Verstappen and Red Bull.
The clause reportedly lets Verstappen speak with rival teams if Red Bull sits outside the top two in the Constructors’ Championship at the start of the August summer break. That possibility has gained attention as results dip, increasing speculation that leading teams may try to sign the 28-year-old Dutch driver.

Mercedes explored a move for Verstappen last year, and McLaren has now been linked as another serious option. Talk of McLaren intensified after Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, agreed to join the team in two years’ time, prompting questions about whether Verstappen might follow later.
Red Bull hopes performance gains can convince Verstappen to stay at least for 2027. Mekies made clear that the team’s upgrade package at the Austrian Grand Prix needs to show visible progress. Stronger form could help reassure Verstappen that Red Bull can again challenge for championships under the current Formula One rules.
Mekies outlined what Verstappen expects from the team, focusing on car speed above all else. "Max wants a fast car, [he] always wanted a fast car, Mekies told the media in between Friday's practice sessions. He completely trusts us in making sure we are doing everything we can, short-term and long-term, to ensure we return to success and continuous success. We look at the results on the tracks, that's the only thing that matters. Hopefully the results will improve rapidly."
The season has been difficult for Verstappen, who is 101 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli after only seven races. Verstappen has often expressed frustration with Formula One’s latest regulations for this season and has even hinted that retirement could come sooner than expected if the direction of the sport does not appeal.
Despite Red Bull’s struggles, Verstappen remains close to an important Formula One landmark. Verstappen has 3,499.5 career points and is one point away from reaching 3,500. Only Lewis Hamilton has already crossed that mark, with 5,133.5 points, underlining the scale of Verstappen’s career record despite current difficulties.
{TABLE_1}No circuit suits Verstappen better than the Austrian Grand Prix based on past records. Verstappen has four wins at the Red Bull Ring, more than any other driver. Verstappen also holds event records for six podiums, four pole positions and four fastest laps, although Verstappen has not won this race since the 2023 season.
Verstappen’s 2026 form contrasts with those historic numbers. Verstappen has taken only one podium so far, in Canada, and has otherwise struggled to fight at the front. That gap between past dominance and current form sharpens focus on Red Bull’s development work and whether the latest upgrade can close the deficit.
Max Verstappen Red Bull performance targets and Mekies’ stance
Mekies stressed that Verstappen is not being chased for constant updates about contract plans. "I'm convinced that Max wants to see continuous progress. He knows very well that you don't go from one second [deficit] to zero in no time, Mekies added. But he wants to see that path to continue to improve. I think it's only about overall lap time, so if we can close that gap to only a couple of tenths, it would mean that we still keep having the gap to competition, and hopefully we will be in striking range soon. I'm not asking Max every week if he's going to stay. Max has made clear to us that he wants to continue with the team. It's equally clear that he needs a fast car for him to be happy with the team."
As Red Bull approaches the August deadline linked to Verstappen’s clause, every race weekend carries added weight. Results before the summer break will shape not only the championship picture but also Verstappen’s medium-term plans, with Red Bull’s ability to deliver a fast car likely to decide whether the partnership extends beyond 2026.
