Verstappen Confirms His Future With Red Bull Remains Secure Despite Horner's Departure

Max Verstappen insists that Christian Horner's recent departure from Red Bull will not affect his future with the team. He emphasises the importance of differing opinions within the team and focuses on improving car performance.

Max Verstappen has clarified that his future with Red Bull remains secure despite the recent dismissal of Christian Horner as team principal. Horner's departure comes as Red Bull struggles in fourth place in the Formula One constructors' championship, trailing McLaren by 288 points. Verstappen's own season has been challenging, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris leading the standings.

Verstappen, who joined Red Bull in 2016 and made history by winning the Spanish Grand Prix at just 18 years old, has faced questions about his future amid rumours of a strained relationship with Horner. Despite these speculations, Verstappen remains committed to Red Bull, where he is contracted until 2028 but has clauses for early termination.

Verstappen Assures Red Bull Future is Secure

When asked if Horner's exit and Laurent Mekies' promotion would influence his decision to stay, Verstappen stated: "No, it doesn’t really. I think people can have a difference of opinion here and then. I actually expect that to happen because if everyone always agrees, there is a problem. You need to have a difference of opinions." He emphasised that his focus remains on improving the car's performance.

The Dutch driver also shared that he was informed about Horner's firing beforehand, saying: "I have a good relationship with them, you know, so I think it’s quite normal that they inform some people in the team before it goes out." Verstappen added that he provided his opinion on the matter but chose to keep it private.

Verstappen set an F1 record for most consecutive victories during the 2023 season, winning 10 races in a row from Miami to Italy. That year, he claimed victory in 19 out of 22 races, securing his third consecutive drivers' championship. In 2022, he achieved second place for most race wins in a single year with 15 victories.

His dominance extended over 63 consecutive races at the top of the drivers' championship standings between the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix and the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This achievement marks the longest period any driver has led the standings continuously.

Future Prospects Amid Team Dynamics

Toto Wolff from Mercedes has hinted at interest in Verstappen amid these changes. However, Verstappen remains focused on making Red Bull competitive again under new regulations. He expressed excitement about working with different perspectives within the team.

Verstappen confirmed he had spoken with Horner after his departure: "Yeah, I did. It was great to speak to him." As Formula One resumes this weekend with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa following a mid-season break, all eyes will be on how these developments impact Red Bull's performance moving forward.
