Max Verstappen, despite Red Bull's RB21 not performing at its best this season, is considered by Damon Hill to be at the pinnacle of his career. Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive drivers' championship in 2024, joining an elite group of only five drivers to achieve this milestone. His dominance has been a key factor in Red Bull's success over recent years.
Red Bull's supremacy began to wane midway through the 2024 season. Although Verstappen won four out of the first five races and Sergio Perez also performed well, McLaren and Ferrari started closing the gap. Verstappen went winless for ten races until his remarkable performance at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

This year, Verstappen has faced challenges keeping up with McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Currently, he trails Piastri by 61 points after being spun out by Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli during the Austrian Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Red Bull sits fourth in the constructors' standings, trailing McLaren by 255 points after 11 races.
The team's struggles have been compounded by driver changes early in the season. Liam Lawson replaced Perez but lasted only two races before Yuki Tsunoda took over. Tsunoda has since scored just 10 points for Red Bull. Despite these challenges, Verstappen remains a constant force, winning two races this season.
Damon Hill praised Verstappen's exceptional talent despite driving an underperforming car. "Right, he's formidable," Hill told Stats Perform. "There's no doubt he is extraordinary, and he's at the very peak of what it's possible to be as a racing driver in Formula One." Hill highlighted Verstappen's speed and determination as key attributes.
Hill acknowledged Verstappen's fierce competitiveness on track, noting that he can sometimes be overly aggressive. However, Hill emphasized that Verstappen consistently extracts more from his car than expected: "He delivers more than possibly anybody could out of that car."
Verstappen aims for a better result at the upcoming British Grand Prix after retiring in Austria. He hasn't retired from two races in a single F1 season since 2022 (Australia and Bahrain). The last time he retired from consecutive races was back in 2020.
A new documentary titled "Hill" will be available on Sky and streaming service NOW in July. This documentary will provide further insights into Damon Hill's career and perspectives on Formula One racing.
