Max Verstappen secured his first victory of the 2025 season at the Japanese Grand Prix, overcoming challenges from Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Starting from pole position, Verstappen maintained his lead throughout the race, finishing 1.4 seconds ahead of Norris. Piastri followed closely behind his McLaren teammate. This win brings Verstappen within one point of championship leader Norris, while Piastri climbs to third in the standings.
Despite intense pressure from McLaren, Verstappen remained composed. Norris came closest to overtaking after both drivers pitted simultaneously, with Norris having a quicker stop by a second. However, he ran out of track space and ended up on the grass. "He drove off by himself," Verstappen remarked, with stewards agreeing not to investigate further.

The top six drivers finished in their starting positions. Charles Leclerc held off George Russell for fourth place, while Kimi Antonelli secured sixth after leading laps for the first time in Formula One. Lewis Hamilton moved up to seventh from eighth on the grid by overtaking Isack Hadjar early in the race.
Verstappen made history as the first driver to win four consecutive Japanese Grands Prix. His victory was somewhat anticipated since seven of the last eight winners at Suzuka started from pole position. Meanwhile, Lando Norris marked his 131st Grand Prix appearance with McLaren, equalling Mika Hakkinen's record as the third most-capped driver for the team.
Yuki Tsunoda finished 12th in his debut race for Red Bull at his home Grand Prix. Despite a disappointing practice session earlier in the weekend, Verstappen improved significantly to clinch this victory. The trend of pole sitters winning continued, with Valtteri Bottas being an exception in 2019 when he finished third.
The current championship standings see Lando Norris leading with 62 points, closely followed by Max Verstappen with 61 points and Oscar Piastri with 49 points. In the constructors' standings, McLaren leads with 111 points, followed by Mercedes with 75 points and Red Bull with 61 points.
