Victor Wembanyama's Greedy 40-Point Haul Leaves Spurs Wanting More

Victor Wembanyama delivered a 40-point, 12-rebound performance in 26 minutes as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 136-108. The display highlighted his scoring efficiency and pursuing more points, reinforcing his impact while Spurs push for continued success in the Western Conference.

Victor Wembanyama powered the San Antonio Spurs to a 136-108 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, yet still felt there was more to chase. The rookie scored 40 points in only 26 minutes, dominated inside, and drove San Antonio to a 37-16 record, as the Spurs claimed a 10th victory from their last 13 games.

The Lakers played without LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, and Wembanyama attacked early against the short-handed line-up. The French centre then watched from the bench in the fourth quarter, as the coaching staff protected minutes ahead of the next game, even though a personal scoring milestone remained within reach.

Wembanyama's 40-point haul leaves Spurs hungry

Wembanyama’s 40-point performance came with impressive efficiency and all-round production. The Spurs star went 13-of-20 from the field and collected 12 rebounds, delivering a double-double that shaped the contest. No Lakers defender found an answer, and San Antonio controlled the tempo from the opening minutes until the final buzzer.

The opening quarter set the tone. Wembanyama struck for 25 points in that period alone, hitting eight of nine shots. That outburst produced the third-highest scoring quarter in Spurs history, with only George Gervin’s 33 points and David Robinson’s 28 points ranking higher. The Lakers fell behind quickly and never recovered momentum.

The numbers placed Wembanyama in select company. It was only the fifth time in the shot clock era, dating back to 1954-55, that any NBA player scored at least 40 points in 26 minutes or fewer. Wembanyama’s 40 points and 12 rebounds also matched a feat only previously achieved by Patrick Ewing in such limited action.

San Antonio’s supporting cast also took advantage of the comfortable margin. Carter Bryant set a career high with 16 points, while Dylan Harper added 15. Their production helped maintain the lead once Wembanyama sat, and allowed rotations to spread minutes, with the Spurs already thinking about the upcoming Western Conference test.

Wembanyama made it clear that the coaching decision to rest late went against personal desire, yet matched team priorities. "I was also pushing to go back, but I mean, they did the right thing by keeping me on the bench," Wembanyama said. "We have got to think long term. But yeah, these kinds of games, you have got to have greed. I mean, every game you have to have this greed to want more every time, Because you know at all times it doesn’t matter who’s on the court, it’s somebody who’s going to want to stop you from doing what you do out there. So you have got to be greedy."

After the win, Wembanyama explained that internal standards, rather than the weakened Lakers roster, drove the early surge. "What got me going was just honestly proving myself a point, proving my team a point," said Wembanyama. "I’m not worried about us, not worried about myself against good teams, but history has shown that I need to be worried about myself against teams like this. So yeah, I mean, we don’t just talk about what we need to do. We need to actually act."

Wembanyama suggested that his career-best mark of 50 points was within range if he had returned. The forward instead accepted the broader picture, with San Antonio sitting second in the Western Conference and preparing to face the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, a match-up that could shape the standings further.

"But I also know we have got to be fresh for tomorrow," said Wembanyama. "We have got to make another statement tomorrow. So it’s a team game at the end of the day. The real stat that matters is the W or the L."

San Antonio left the floor with a comfortable margin, a rare statistical milestone and another Western Conference win secured. Wembanyama’s display against the short-handed Lakers underlined current form, yet the focus quickly shifted to recovery, another statement opportunity against the Warriors, and maintaining pressure near the top of the standings.
