Vijender storms into semis, assured of a medal

Beijing, Aug 20: Displaying awesome agility and fire power Vijender Kumar pulverised Ecuador's Carlos Gongora to storm into the semi finals of the Boxing middleweight 75kg category in the Olympic Games.

Vijender dominated the entire bout, eventually winning 9-4. Vijender clinched the first round with 2-0 points. Whereas, his opponent Gongora was helpless before the mighty Indian in the first round. Vijender continued his lead in the second round, winning it with 2-1. He maintained his dominance and after the third round he took 2-0 lead whereas Carlos tried to come back into the competition with one point but was soon weakened by the aggressive Indian and led the round with 3-1

In the fourth round, mighty Vijender started with one point lead. But Carlos fought back with 3 points afterwards. The Equador boxer was all helpless before Vijender kumar, who clinched the fourth round also.

The win has ensured that India will come back from Beijing with its biggest ever Olympic medal haul. Vijender had earlier stormed into the quarter-finals of the 75 kg middleweight Boxing event on Saturday after he outclassed Thailand"s Champuphuang Angkhan 13-3 in a one sided match.

It is to be noted that no Indian boxer has won a medal in the history of Olympics.
