Vinales, the MotoGP champion in waiting!

Vinales is the only rider to win three races this season and looks well poised to mount a serious title challenge.

Bengaluru, July 31: If anyone can stop Marc Marquez from winning a fourth MotoGP world title then it has to be Maverick Vinales.

The two Spaniards have been bitter rivals since the days at the junior level and as the MotoGP season resumes after the summer break on Sunday (August 6) at Czech Republic, sparks are bound to fly in the battle between the two known for the dare-devil riding style.

Maverick Vinales celebrates after winning the French GP

Continuing with his impressive pre-season form, Vinales started the year in style, winning back-to-back in Qatar and Argentina and followed it up with another victory in France. Currently, he is just five points behind of the leader Marquez in the championship standings.

In fact, he is the only rider to win three races this season and going by his current form, he looks well poised to mount a serious title challenge.

"I prefer to have the victories and titles behind me. You want to show to everyone that you can be strong and be at the front and win. I think it is easy to lose your way but at the moment I think I have my feet on the ground and I haven't gotten lost," said Vinales when asked about his title prospects.

The pre-season move from Suzuki to Yamaha where he replaced three-time former champion Jorge Lorenzo, who switched to Ducati, has done wonders for the 22-year-old and he himself was the first to admit it.

"The first two years at Suzuki were really difficult, not for my riding style but the machine was not at the top level. But after the move to Yamaha, it has been really good and I'm so happy. I improve day-by-day and at the moment I don't feel too much pressure," said Vinales, a former Moto3 world champion.

No wonder Yamaha boss Lin Jarvis rates Vinales so high and draws parallels with Lorenzo.
"Vinales and Lorenzo are very different and their characters are too. What I really see is that both have things in common: they have a lot of talent and a big ambition. I'm convinced that Maverick will win several MotoGP titles, as Jorge (Lorenzo) did," Jarvis said.
