Indian hopes were high as Vinesh Phogat approached the Women's Wrestling 50kg final at the Paris Olympics 2024. However, a significant turn of events led to her disqualification due to failing to meet the 50kg weight requirement.
This development has drastically altered the medal standings and the lineup for both the gold and bronze medal matches.

Vinesh Phogat's journey to the final had been nothing short of remarkable. She began with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Japan's Yui Susaki, the defending Olympic and world champion who had been unbeaten in 82 international matches.
Following this, Phogat secured a dominant 5-0 win over world number 7 Ukrainian Ostava Livach, and a convincing victory over Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals, which set the stage for her anticipated gold medal match against America's Sarah Hildebrandt.
Unfortunately, Phogat failed to make the weight cut on the second day of weigh-ins, exceeding the 50kg limit. According to Article 11 of the International Wrestling Rules, if a wrestler fails the weigh-in, they are disqualified and replaced by the wrestler they defeated in the semifinal.
Consequently, Guzman Lopez, who lost to Phogat in the semifinals, will now compete in the final against Hildebrandt for the gold medal.
The disqualification also affected the bronze medal matches. Typically, the bronze medals in wrestling are determined through repechage rounds, which involve the wrestlers who lost to the two finalists. In this case, Japan's Yui Susaki and Ukraine's Ostava Livach, who were both defeated by Phogat in earlier rounds, were pulled into the repechage round.
With Guzman Lopez moving to the final, the repechage match between Susaki and Livach will now decide the bronze medal winner. This means that instead of competing for a spot in the final, Susaki and Livach will face each other directly for the bronze medal.
This announcement has reshaped the competition. While it is a significant setback for Phogat and her supporters, it presents a new opportunity for Guzman Lopez to compete for the gold medal. Meanwhile, Susaki and Livach will vie for the bronze medal.
