Vinesh Phogat In tears as she receives heroic reception at Delhi Airport after returning from Paris

By Rishab VM

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat returned to India on Saturday, receiving a reception at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi that rivaled, and even surpassed, the celebrations for India's bronze medal-winning hockey team at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Despite the heartbreak she endured in Paris, where she was disqualified from the 50kg final due to being 100 grams overweight, Vinesh was greeted by a massive and jubilant crowd that highlighted the admiration and respect she commands as one of India’s premier athletes.

As Vinesh stepped into the arrival area, the scene was nothing short of electric. The atmosphere at the IGI Airport in Delhi was reminiscent of the kind of fervor usually reserved for medal winners, with hundreds of fans, family members, and well-wishers gathered to welcome the wrestling star.

The sheer magnitude of the reception was a testament to the impact Vinesh has had on Indian sports and the nation’s collective heart, despite the disappointment of her disqualification.

The Indian wrestling fraternity was well represented, with fellow wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik standing proudly beside Vinesh, holding the tricolour high. Their presence was a strong show of unity and support, underscoring the close-knit nature of India’s wrestling community.

Congress leader Deepender Hooda, a prominent figure known for his support of sports and athletes in Haryana, also joined the crowd at the airport to welcome Vinesh. His involvement highlighted the broader societal and political recognition of her contributions to Indian sports.

The reception Vinesh received was notably grander than the celebration for the Indian men’s hockey team, which had won a bronze medal at the same Olympic Games. While the hockey team’s achievement was widely celebrated across the country, the scale and intensity of the welcome for Vinesh Phogat spoke volumes about her standing as a national hero.

The scenes at the airport, with people dancing, cheering, were a powerful reflection of the deep respect and admiration Indians hold for her, irrespective of the outcome in Paris.

Emotions ran high as Vinesh emerged from the airport. Overwhelmed by the support, she was visibly moved, her eyes welling up with tears as she saw the sea of fans awaiting her.

It was a moment that crystallized her status as a true champion in the eyes of the nation—someone who had faced immense challenges and yet continued to inspire millions.

Despite not clinching a medal, Vinesh’s journey in Paris, particularly her victory over Pan American Games winner Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba in the semi-finals, reinforced her reputation as a formidable competitor. Her return to India was more than just a homecoming; it was a celebration of her resilience, her fighting spirit, and her unwavering dedication to the sport.

The grand welcome Vinesh Phogat received upon her return to Delhi stands as a poignant reminder that in the world of sports, victories are not only measured by medals but also by the strength of character and the indomitable spirit of the athlete.
