Vinesh Phogat's uncle breaks down after wrestler's disqualification ahead of Gold Medal match in Paris Olympics

By MyKhel Staff

The entire nation has gone in a sombre mood as Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Olympics 2024.

The Indian wrestler, who qualified for the Gold medal match, has been stripped off her match as she was deemed overweight on the day of the final on Wednesday (August 7).

It came as a major shock as the Indian wrestler was assured to win either a Silver or a Gold medal in her final encounter. Phogat reportedly spent the entire night on Tuesday without sleep but weighed around 100 gms more than 50 kg, which means she won't be able to take part in the final. She was hospitalized on Wednesday morning in Paris and has been administered IV fluids for dehydration.

Apart from that, Vinesh will also be placed in the last position, thus effectively ending any hopes of a medal. The official statement from the Olympics read that Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman will now take part in the Gold medal match.

On such a difficult day, it is very hard to keep emotions in control, and Vinesh's uncle Mahavir Singh couldn't keep his as the aged man had tears rolling down his face. The pain of Vinesh's unfortunate disqualification has been vivid and very hard to accept, and a video on social media could see him crying in front of the media.

In the social media video shared by Times of India, a person blamed the Wrestling Federation of India for their questionable weight measurement methods.

"Wrestling Federation of India is also responsible for what happened with Vinesh today. In India, we have national championships that concludes in a single day where wrestlers need to show their weight just once," he wrote.
