VMC felicitates Humpy, Mangal, Chetan

Vijayawada, Jan 30 (UNI) The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) today felicitated Padmashri awardee and chess Grandmaster Koneru Humpy, international archer Mangal Singh Champia and badminton player Chetan Anand.

They were presented a cash award of Rs two lakh and a memento to Humpy, Rs 1 lakh each and a memento to Mangal Singh and Chetan Anand.

Responding to the felicitation, Ms Humpy said she started playing chess at the age of six and the VMC had honoured her when she was the U-19 champion in 1997. She thanked the people of the city for encouraging her.

Ms Humpy explained the importance of physical fitness along with education for children.

Participating as chief guest in the felicitation function, VMC Mayor Mallika Begum said at a very young age Koneru Humpy got the coveted Padmashri which was a great achievement.

She called upon the students assembled there to take the inspiration from Humpy, Mangal Singh and Chetan Anand and bring laurels to the country and the state.
