Warriors Coach Steve Kerr Fuming After Controversial Officiating Call Costs Team NBA Cup Semifinal Spot

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr expressed his anger following a controversial officiating call that led to his team's loss against the Houston Rockets in the NBA Cup. The decision resulted in crucial free throws that determined the game's outcome.

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr expressed his frustration after a narrow 91-90 defeat to the Houston Rockets in the NBA Cup. The loss was marred by a controversial call in the final seconds. With the Warriors leading, Stephen Curry missed a crucial 3-pointer, leading to a chaotic scramble for possession. Gary Payton II secured the rebound but was quickly covered by Houston's Fred VanVleet.

As Payton attempted to pass to Jonathan Kuminga, Kuminga and Jalen Green of the Rockets ended up on the floor fighting for the ball. Kuminga was then called for a personal foul with just 3.5 seconds left. This decision allowed Green to score two free throws, sending Houston to the semifinals in Las Vegas. Kerr was visibly upset, stating, "I wanted to go to Las Vegas."

Kerr Fuming Over Officiating Call in NBA Cup

Kerr continued expressing disbelief over the call, saying he had never seen such an incident in his career. "I've never seen anything like it in my life," he said. He questioned why a loose ball foul was called so far from the basket with so much at stake. Kerr argued that players should decide games, not referees.

Curry shared his coach's sentiments, noting he hadn't reviewed the play but doubted it warranted a foul. "If you're telling me it was a clear foul, I'll shut up," Curry remarked. He believed that such decisions should be left to players rather than being determined by free throws far from the basket.

The officiating crew chief Bill Kennedy defended his decision post-game. He explained that contact with Kuminga's neck and shoulder justified calling a personal foul. Despite this explanation, Curry maintained that while officiating wasn't solely responsible for their loss, it significantly impacted the game's outcome.

Kerr highlighted inconsistencies in officiating throughout the game, describing it as overly physical without many calls being made until this crucial moment. He emphasized that such decisions affect not just games but also careers within this billion-dollar industry.

The Warriors' disappointment stems from their desire to advance further in the tournament and compete in Las Vegas. The controversial ending overshadowed their efforts and left both players and coaches questioning key officiating decisions during critical moments of play.
