Jimmy Butler Season-ending ACL Injury Ends Warriors' Playoff Push

Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler has been ruled out for the rest of the NBA season after suffering a torn right ACL in a 135-112 win over the Miami Heat, a major setback for a Golden State side chasing a Western Conference play-off place.

The injury adds pressure on a Warriors team sitting eighth in the Western Conference at 25-19 and 1.5 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division, after trading for Butler last February in a five-team deal that moved Andrew Wiggins to Miami.

The diagnosis was confirmed on 20 January 2026 by Shams Charania of ESPN, who reported the torn right ACL as season-ending. Butler had already left the court during the third quarter, with the Warriors stating Butler would not return and would undergo an MRI scan.

The incident happened early in the third quarter when Butler leapt to receive a pass and collided with Miami guard Davion Mitchell, then landed awkwardly on the right leg. Butler stayed down in clear pain, held the right knee, and was helped away by teammates Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga.

This is Butler’s third major problem in the same right knee, after a meniscus tear in 2018 and an MCL sprain in 2024. The new ACL damage raises concern for Butler’s long-term durability, while Golden State must now adjust rotation and playmaking options during a tight play-off race.

Before leaving the game against Miami, Butler contributed 17 points, four assists and three rebounds in 21 minutes. Butler ranks second on the Warriors in scoring at 20.0 points per game, behind Stephen Curry’s 27.4 average, and also delivers important support in rebounding and distribution.

Golden State’s performance trends show Butler’s influence on results. The Warriors are 13-8 when Butler reaches the 20.0-point season average, but they stand 12-11 in games where Butler scores 19 or fewer or does not feature, underlining how Butler’s availability and offensive output affect team outcomes.

Butler is averaging 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season while shooting 51.9 per cent from the field and 37.6 per cent from three-point range. Across a 15-year NBA career, Butler holds averages of 18.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists and is a six-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection.

With Butler sidelined following the torn right ACL, Golden State must pursue a play-off place without the second-leading scorer and a key two-way presence, while Butler faces another long rehabilitation period on a knee already affected by a meniscus tear and MCL sprain.
