WATCH: Arshad Nadeem wins hearts, stops victory lap after spotting Indian flag and fans

By MyKhel Staff

Arshad Nadeem's gold medal win in javelin throw event of the Paris Olympics 2024 kicked off celebrations which transcended boundaries late night on Thursday. The 27-year-old crossed the 90-metre mark twice and established a new Olympics record to beat India's defending champion Neeraj Chopra, who finished second and settled for a silver.

Arshad Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra share a healthy bond, and both have shown tremendous mutual respect for each other in the past. In fact, Neeraj earlier voiced his support to his Pakistani rival when he was finding it hard to secure a new javelin for himself.

The fans at the Stade de France also took a cue from the admirable relationship between the two Olympics gold-medallists, and celebrated Arshad Nadeem's historic win in Paris with a lot of joyful cheers.

A video shared by blogger Jiwandeep Singh Ghai has shown Arshad Nadeem stopping during his victory lap after spotting an India flag held by Indians fans. He ran towards them and posed for pictures before resuming.

"Arshad Nadeem is very humble. And he has a special bond with Neeraj Chopra. One for being from neighbouring countries and the other being contemporaries enjoying healthy competition. Nadeem’s Olympic record is very appreciable. If the first throw favoured because of a gust of a wind, no one can take the last throw from him as even that was an Olympics record. He. And he came to us since we’re carrying an #Indianflag Congratulations to Nadeem and Neeraj. Both performed very well and only one can win. For the first time in the Olympic history, no European had a podium finish," Jiwandeep Singh Ghai has captioned the video.

Neeraj Chopra made history on late Thursday night by becoming the first Indian track-and-field athlete to win two consecutive Olympic medals. After making his season best throw of 89.45 meters in the qualification round, the 26-year-old made improvements with an 89.34 meters throw in his second attempt in the final.

However, Arshad Nadeem's new Olympics record throw of 92.97 in his second attempt could not be breached despite six attempts each made by all top eight finalists. Arshad is Pakistan's first-ever individual gold medal at the Olympics.
