Manchester, Mar 11: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich in the summer and Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer is open to the transfer saying he would 'very happy' to see the England international at the Allianz Arena next season.

"I would be very, very happy if Wayne Rooney decided to come to Bayern Munich," Beckenbauer said. "But is this a rumour or is it true? I don't know!"

Rooney has been linked with several clubs across Europe, including Bayern, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, after being benched during United's Champions League loss to Real last Tuesday.

The England striker will entering the last two years of his contract which expires in 2015, but Sir Alex Ferguson insisted that Rooney will offered a new contract to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Rooney, 27, is one of the highest earners at United with a reported £250,000-a-week, but the striker has been in and out of the squad with injuries. Rooney's first-team chances has been reduced after the arrival of Robin van Persie and the rise of Danny Welbeck.

However, United and England legend Sir Bobby Charlton felt Beckenbauer's comments were' premature' and said Rooney remains a 'great player' and will stay at United.

"I think that is a bit premature," Charlton said. "I don't know everything that happens at Manchester United, but I know a little.

"Wayne Rooney maybe has had an injury and has not performed as well as he might have done, but that doesn't mean to say that you get rid of him," he said.

"Sir Alex Ferguson came out and said that he had no intention of letting Wayne Rooney go anywhere. You have to abide by that and I believe it, 100%. He is a great player - why should we get rid of a great player?" Charlton said.
