Wayne Rooney will be offered new contract: Ferguson

Manchester, Mar 10: Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that striker Wayne Rooney will be offered a new deal before his current contract ends in 2015.

Ferguson is keen to end the rumours of rift between him and the striker after Rooney was left out of the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday and the manager said the club are looking to extend Rooney's stay at Old Trafford.

'Rooney will stay at Manchester United'

"We don't want good players to leave," Ferguson said. "There is no issue with the contract. When it has to be renegotiated, it will be."

Rooney is currently United's top earner with £250,000-a-week in wages and the club would expect the striker to take a pay cut to continue his career at Old Trafford, but Ferguson insisted he will not sell the striker despite interests from Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Chelsea.

"He's the (Paul) Gascoigne, the Bobby Charlton. He's the best English player. He's coming to his mature years. He's had a lot of issues this year in terms of illness, injuries and not had a long run of games, but he's still got me 14 goals. He'll end up with 20 goals, no doubt about that," Ferguson added.

Back in 2010, City were ready to sign Rooney after he handed a transfer request questioning the ambition of United, but the striker took a u-turn signing a mega five-year deal worth£60million.

Rooney has lost his place after the arrival of Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa and the rise of Danny Welbeck with Ferguson playing him in a much deeper role in midfield.

Rooney is likely to return to the starting XI against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday at Old Trafford.
