Weary Berdych races into Thai Open second round

By Staff

BANGKOK, Sep 26 (Reuters) Third-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych rushed past Thai qualifier Kittipong Wachiramanowong 6-3 6-0 to reach the second round of the Thailand Open today.

Weary after a long-haul flight from Europe, Berdych had no plans to hang around and dumped the hapless Thai teenager out of the competition in just 50 minutes.

The lofty Czech fired five aces and lost only six service points to set up a second-round match with German Mischa Zverev.

''It was the best match I could have asked for, I've had a tough week,'' he told reporters. ''He tried to be aggressive but made a lot of mistakes like most juniors do.

''I'm jetlagged and I've had big problems getting ready. I've not had much time to prepare, so it was a good start.'' Sixth seed Dmitry Tursunov of Russia took three sets to get past Austrian Werner Eschauer, serving 10 aces to win 6-3 3-6 6-1 in 87 minutes.

Spain's Fernando Verdasco beat American David Martin 6-2 6-1, Russia's Igor Kunitsyn defeated George Bastl of Switzerland 6-3 6-4 and Nick Lindahl of Australia saw off American Sam Querrey 2-6 6-4 6-3.

Sweden's Joachim Johansson withdrew from the competition on Wednesday, following world numbers two and three, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, and Asian number one Lee Hyung-taik, who have all pulled out of the 0,000 contest with injuries.
