The bustling metropolis of Kolkata is gearing up for a significant event in the martial arts realm as the Kishore Bharati Krirangan (KBK) stadium will the inaugural West Bengal Open Kyokushin Karate Championship 2023.
This forthcoming martial arts extravaganza is set to be held on the 16th and 17th of December, is expected to draw a throng of approximately 200 participants. These karate practitioners, hailing from across 15 esteemed Kyokushin Karate institutions within the state, will vie for supremacy across various age and gender divisions.

The Championship is the brainchild of the local martial arts training center, Mike's Martial Arts, which has successfully rallied the support of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, the Government of West Bengal, and has aligned with the national FIT India Movement.
The competition promises to showcase the prowess and skill of martial artists, with the likes of Rishika Banerjee, Sneha Samanta, and Babu Biswas poised to take the stage. These athletes, along with many others, represent the cream of the crop from various districts across West Bengal and are gearing up to demonstrate their mettle.
The event is not only a testament to the growing popularity of martial arts but also to the supportive corporate community, with prominent entities such as UCO Bank, Limca SPORTZ, Fit India, Sanjeevani Homeo Care, Chatterjee Tutorials, WOW Momo, and Edition Sports stepping up as partners. This strong backing underscores the significance of the event and highlights the potential for martial arts to further permeate the Indian sports culture.
With a robust schedule planned, the first day of the championship on the 16th will witness over 100 bouts featuring young karatekas aged 6 to 14 years. The subsequent day will see another 100 bouts with participants ranging from 14 years to adults, competing in an array of 48 event categories. This diverse and inclusive structure ensures that martial artists at every level have a platform to display their dedication and skill.

Speaking on the occasion, Sensei Mayukh Banerjee (3rd Dan Black Belt and Founder Mikes Martial Arts) said, "Kyokushin is a full-contact Karate style of stand-up fighting which originated in Japan. With the sport Karate making its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as well as being part of the Asian Games roster, India can look to reap rich rewards of its long history of engagement with this Japanese martial art, provided a committed, disciplined and structured approach is adopted.
"We have also had some very encouraging results in the international circuit recently and have some very talented young fighters. Championships such as these are necessary to test the mettle of the talent in the state as also to find hidden gems, yet unearthed."
