West Zone scores 349 for seven on day one

Rajkot, Jan 26 (UNI) A sparkling century by middle order batsman Yusuf Pathan (107) and on opening stand between Sahil Kukreja and Ajinkeya Rahane of 124 runs helped West Zone score 349 for seven against Central Zone on the opening day of the four-day Duleep Trophy Match at the Madhav Rao Scindia Cricket Ground, here today.

Yusuf Pathan showed his maturity and smashed century in just 51 balls. His classy innings came to an end when he tried to cross the fence, caught by H Rawle off medium pacer S S Sanyal. His innings (107) were studded with five mighty sixes and thirteen boundaries while facing 66 balls as he stayed at the pitch for 88 minutes.

Central's captain tried every bowler to contain the run flow from his willow but could succeed only after he had completed his coveted mark.

After winning the toss, West Zone got an excellent start with Sahil Kukreja and Ajinkeya Rahane scoring 124 for the opening stand and by the end of the day they had reached 349 for seven wickets. At Lunch West Zone were 112 for no loss.

Right hand medium pacer S S Sanyal struck in the second session and removed both the Mumbai's openers in 41st an 43rd over.

First he removed A Rahane after he has completed half century.

He was caught at the slip by Mohd Kaif. The next to go was Sahil Kurkreja, who got an outside edge and caught by wicket keeper M Rawat after scoring 72 in which he smashed twelve fours and has faced 135 balls.

West Zone Captain Parthiv Patel went cheaply. He made three runs. Medium pacer Sanjay Bangar had taken his wicket and he was caught by S Sanyal. Rakesh Solanki also did not last long and was out after scoring 25 from the bowling of S Tyagi. H Rawle did not make mistake and easily accepted the catch offered by Solanki.

The second session belongs to Central Zone who captured four wickets in addition to the 50 runs. West Zone slumped from 124 for one to 174 for four wickets.

Saurashtra's Tejeshwar Pujara and Yusuf Pathan steadied the ship and added 136 runs for the fifth wicket. Major contribution of runs came from Yusuf Pathan's aggressive knock.
