Western region dominate opening day of IOC sports meet in Goa

Panaji, Feb 21 (UNI) Reigning champions Western Region stole the limelight on the first day of the five- day 14th Indian Oil Corporation Inter Regional sports meet which got underway at compal indoor complex here.

In the men Carrom team championship, out of the four matches, Western region blanked Northern 3-0, beat head office by 2-1 and in the women's event, Western region outplayed Northern region by 3-0. Southern region beat Eastern region by 2-1 in the men's event.

In the Badminton events, out of the six matches, Western won 3, while Southern, Eastern and Head Office one each.

In the chess team championship, Eastern region leading the table with 4 points, followed by Souther region with 3 points from two rounds each. Head office also won with 2 points from two rounds and Northern region and western region with 2 and 1 point from one round each.

The seeded players Nirmalya Chattergy (ER), S G Sekhar (WR), Anand Arolkar (HQ), Inderjeet (NR) and Subbaiah (SR) had won their respective matches and kept their hope alive for the championship, which will be decided tomorrow after the end of the 5th round.

In the bridge events, after 3 rounds of Swiss league Western region topping with 58 VPS, Followed by Eastern with 43, Head office with 40, Northern Region 23 and Southern region 11.

In the tale tennis events. In the men's team championship, out of the seven matches, Western region and Northen region won three each while Southern region one. In the Women's event Western and Head office won two each and in the Veteran's team championship, out of the five matches, Western won two, Northern, Head Offic and Southern won one each.
