In a crucial moment for Indian wrestling, sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya's meeting with Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Sanjay Kumar Singh has reignited hopes for the country's participation in upcoming international tournaments.
With the clock ticking toward the Seniors Asian Championships in Jordan next month, the discussion could pave the way for resolving the ongoing deadlock between WFI and the sports ministry.

The suspension of WFI last December has left Indian wrestlers in limbo, unable to participate in critical qualification events due to bureaucratic roadblocks. If left unresolved, this situation could not only impact their chances at the Asian Championships but also threaten their qualification for the World Championships in September which is an essential pathway to Olympic qualification.
But after the meeting, the chances of Indian wrestlers participating looks much more possible now.
"The meeting lasted for around an hour and issues like the WFI's suspension and participation of Indian wrestlers at the Asian Championships were discussed," a source was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.
While provisional entries can still be submitted, the real challenge lies in ensuring fair selection trials, which remain stalled due to legal complications. With the Delhi High Court's directive not allowing WFI from organizing trials, the federation's suspension must be lifted for a transparent selection process to take place. The next court hearing on March 3 will be a turning point, potentially determining whether India fields a full-strength squad.
For wrestlers, the uncertainty has been deeply unsettling. Many had attempted to voice their concerns directly to the sports minister after learning they would miss the second Ranking Series in Albania.
"We really hope the talks succeed as we can not afford to miss the Asian tournament. If allowed, the Asian Championships will be our first international event this year, and also a getaway for the worlds," a Wrestler told the aforementioned publication.
If a resolution is reached in time, the Asian Championships could mark the first major international outing for Indian wrestlers this year.
