Which Hand of Neeraj Chopra Was Fractured During Brussels Diamond League Finals?

By MyKhel Staff

In a surprising revelation, Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra shared that he competed in the Brussels Diamond League Finals with a fractured hand.

The injury, sustained just days before the event, raised eyebrows as Chopra nearly clinched the title, missing out by a mere centimetre.

His throw of 87.86 meters was enough for a runner-up finish for the second consecutive year, but it was his tenacity and determination in the face of this new challenge that truly stood out. However, Neeraj Chopra revealed it was his wrong or left hand that was fractured before the event.

Neeraj, who has been contending with fitness issues throughout the season, including a persistent groin injury, disclosed the details of his hand fracture via social media. "On Monday, I injured myself in practice and x-rays showed that I had fractured the fourth metacarpal in my left hand. It was another painful challenge for me," he wrote.

Despite the injury, Chopra, with the support of his team, pushed through the pain to compete in the season's final event. The left hand, while not his throwing arm, plays a crucial role in maintaining balance and stability during his javelin throws. The injury added a layer of complexity to his already challenging season, where the elusive 90-meter mark continued to evade him. However, his resilience to compete in such a high-stakes event despite this setback reflects the grit that has made him one of India's top athletes.

Chopra's 2024 season has been a mix of highs and lows. While he added an Olympic silver to his historic gold from Tokyo, injuries have plagued him throughout. Now, with both a groin injury and a hand fracture to recover from, Chopra is focused on healing and returning stronger. He expressed gratitude to his supporters, noting, "2024 has made me a better athlete and person. See you in 2025."
