Chess runs in the family-her father played the game as a hobby, and her maternal great-grandfather once played with the revered Indian philosopher Vinoba Bhave. Divya began her journey on the chessboard at a very young age, showing exceptional talent from the start. She pursued her early education at Bhavans Bhagwandas Purohit Vidya Mandir in Nagpur.

Divya currently holds the titles of Woman Grandmaster (WGM) and International Master (IM). As of July 2025, her FIDE rating stands at 2463, with a peak rating of 2501 achieved in October 2024. She is ranked No. 2 among Indian women and continues to rise rapidly on the global stage.

Over the years, Divya has built an impressive résumé. She is a three-time gold medalist at the Chess Olympiad and has earned multiple gold medals at prestigious events like the Asian Championship, World Youth Championship, and World Junior Championship. In 2022, she won the Women's Indian Chess Championship and secured a bronze medal at the Chess Olympiad the same year. She also played a key role in India's gold-winning campaign at the 2020 FIDE Online Olympiad.

Her momentum continued in 2023 and 2024, with wins at the Asian Women's Chess Championship in Almaty, Tata Steel India Rapid, Sharjah Challengers, and the FIDE World U20 Girls Championship. At the 2025 World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships, she stunned world No. 1 Hou Yifan in a blitz thriller, helping her team earn silver and bronze.

Divya Deshmukh is not just a rising star-she's now a world champion, and a role model for India's next generation of chess players.
