Who is Gadadhar Sahu? Odisha Powerlifter Once Declared ‘Dead’ Now An Insipiration!

In 2009, Gadadhar Sahu's life took a drastic turn during a journey from Odisha to Surat, Gujarat. A mishap while deboarding the train left him with severe injuries, leading first responders to erroneously declare him dead.

It was only during the transfer to the morgue that medical professionals discovered he was still alive but needed amputation of his legs. At the time of the accident, Sahu was in 7th grade.

Now, 29-year-old Gadadhar Sahu has triumphed over adversity, securing a gold medal for Odisha in powerlifting at the Khelo India Para Games, lifting an impressive 140kg in the 58kg category.

Despite facing poverty and the challenges posed by the tragic accident, Sahu refused to succumb to despair. Following the incident, conventional avenues for a normal life closed, and he assisted his brother in operating a fast-food kiosk in their hometown of Narendrapur, located in Odisha's Ganjam District.

Finding solace and a new identity in bodybuilding, Sahu initially won a gold medal in the wheelchair category of the 'Mr Odisha Junior Bodybuilding Competition' in 2016.

However, the financial strain of required supplements led him to the discipline of para powerlifting.

Inspired by para-athletes he read about in the newspaper, Sahu embraced the challenges of being a para-athlete, drawing motivation from his background in bodybuilding.

Reflecting on his journey, he emphasized his relentless focus on becoming the best version of himself, training rigorously for four hours daily while balancing work in his brother's business.

Despite limited facilities in his hometown, the Odisha government's invitation to train at Kalinga Stadium for ten days ahead of the Khelo India Para Games played a crucial role in his preparation.

Expressing gratitude for the support he received, Sahu acknowledged the role of the Odisha government and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, highlighting the significance of the platform provided by the Government of India. Looking ahead, he aspires to stand on the podium with the Indian flag and win medals for India.

Sahu's success serves as a testament to the potential of para-athletes in the country, and he hopes others will have similar opportunities to showcase their capabilities and bring glory to India.
