Who is Manizha Talash, Afghan B-girl who got disqualified from Paris Olympics 2024?

By Meeth Agrawal

Manizha Talash, the trailblazing Afghan B-girl who made history by becoming the first female breaker from Afghanistan to compete in the Olympic Games, faced a disappointing turn of events at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Talash, who was representing the IOC Refugee Team, was disqualified during the pre-qualifier stage of the breaking competition after making a political statement during her routine. Let's find out more about her.

Manizha Talash

Who is Manizha Talash?

Manizha Talash, a 21-year-old breaking star, hails from Kabul, Afghanistan. She grew up in a country where opportunities for women in sports, especially in disciplines like breaking, were severely limited. Talash discovered breaking through social media and quickly fell in love with the art form.

Her passion and dedication led her to join the Superiors Crew, a breaking group in Kabul, where she was the only female member. Talash's journey as a breaker is a testament to her resilience. Despite the many challenges she faced in Afghanistan, including societal expectations and family responsibilities, she continued to pursue her passion.

Her love for breaking remained a constant even after she fled Afghanistan following the Taliban's return to power in 2021. Seeking refuge in Spain, she continued to hone her skills, ultimately earning a spot on the IOC Refugee Team for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Why Was Manizha Talash Disqualified?

Manizha Talash's disqualification came after she took to the floor in the pre-qualifier battle against B-Girl India Sardjoe of the Netherlands, wearing a light blue cape with the words "Free Afghan Women" prominently displayed. This powerful message was aimed at bringing global attention to the plight of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

Since the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, Afghan women have faced severe restrictions, including the closure of girls' high schools, limitations on movement without a male guardian, and restrictions on access to public spaces.

The World DanceSport Federation, the governing body for breaking, ruled that Talash's cape violated Olympic rules that prohibit political statements on the field of play. As a result, she was disqualified from the competition, cutting short her historic Olympic debut.

"Talash was disqualified for displaying a political slogan on her attire," the World DanceSport Federation said in a statement released on Friday, August 9.

Despite the disqualification, Manizha Talash's message resonated with many around the world. The slogan "Free Afghan Women" on her cape was a bold statement against the oppressive policies of the Taliban regime, which have drastically curtailed the freedoms of women in Afghanistan. Talash's actions highlighted the ongoing struggle for women's rights in her homeland and brought much-needed attention to the issue on a global stage.

While her Olympic journey was marred by controversy, Manizha Talash's courage and determination to use her platform to advocate for Afghan women will be remembered as a powerful moment in the history of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Her story is a poignant reminder of the power of sport to inspire change and the ongoing fight for equality and human rights.
